Board of Regents Faculty Award
The Board of Regents Faculty Award was developed by the Council of University
System Faculty (CUSF) in order to publicly recognize distinguished performance
on the part of faculty members, and to place faculty achievements before the
public on a regular basis. Eligible faculty include all full-time faculty employed
by the University of Maryland System, who have distinguished themselves in the
areas of teaching, research and scholarship, and service. One to three $1000
prizes in each of five areas are made to faculty members from research institutions
in the areas of Teaching, Scholarship, Public Service (including K-12 programs
and clinical practice), Mentoring, and Interinstitutional Collaborations. See
also a more detailed
description of the award, the campus
submission procedures and

list
of University award
recipients. For additional information, contact Ellin
Scholnick at (301) 405-4252.
Departmental
Award for Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Teaching
Jointly sponsored by the Lilly-CTE Teaching Fellows and the Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Studies, this award (a maximum of $5,000) seek to recognize notable improvements in undergraduate education at the department, program, or University level. Any campus department, program, or interdepartmental program can apply for the award. Submissions should highlight a current activity, which has made important contributions to a significant educational issue in the past two to three years. This could be a new approach to a problem, or a significant advance in an ongoing activity. In line with the award’s purpose, the emphasis should describe how the combined efforts of the unit (not the work of an individual) accomplished the significant result. See the Center for Teaching Excellence's webpage for a more detailed description of the award or contact Spencer Benson at (301) 314-1288.

The title is accompanied by an annual honorarium of $5000 to support the awardee's professional activities. For more information, see the award criteria and nomination process or contact contact Elizabeth Wineke at (301) 405-6803.

General
Research Board Awards
The General Research Board (GRB) sponsors five programs to support or enhance faculty research projects. See their webpage for application deadlines and a listing of past recipients.
The Distinguished Faculty Research Fellowship is of two types. One type of fellowship allows recipients to pursue one year of full time research and scholarly work to complete a major project. Up to five academic year fellowships may be awarded. These fellowships are available to Associate Professors and Professors who apply to and must be nominated by their Colleges. Candidates who apply to GRB for a Semester Research Award may also be nominated for a Distinguished Faculty Research Fellowship.
Each College may nominate up to three candidates. The four largest Colleges, Arts and Humanities; Behavioral and Social Science; Computer, Math and Physical Sciences; and Life Sciences, may have one additional nomination. No more than two awards will be made to any one college. All Fellows will be required to disseminate the results of their research to the campus community through a graduate seminar colloquium, and/or other forum, within one year of the completion of the fellowship. In addition, all Fellows will be required to present a one hour seminar on their project during the Fall as part of The Graduate School Distinguished Research Fellow Seminar Series.
Recipients are expected to be free of all committee duties during the year of fellowship. However, it is desirable that Fellows remain in residence at the College Park Campus to interact with their colleagues and graduate students on their scholarly work. Recipients are also expected to spend a minimum of one year at the University upon the completion of the fellowship. Award amounts are: $20,000 to fellows' departments for full professors; $18,000 to fellows' departments for associate professors; $5,000 additional to support the professional activities of the recipient.
A second type of fellowship, open to all full-time Professors and Associate Professors, is intended to honor and support emerging academic leaders whose body of scholarly work is judged outstanding. Awardees receive an unrestricted grant of $5,000 per year for two years. Deans, Department Chairs, and Directors may make nominations.
This award enables a faculty member to devote full time to a research or creative project during one semester. All tenured and tenure-track faculty members are eligible. The faculty member continues to receive his or her regular salary and is awarded $500 to support research expenses. Funds are provided to the recipient's department to be used for faculty replacement.
This award provides a stipend in the form of summer salary for one or two months to enable faculty members to pursue research during the summer. All tenured and tenure-track faculty members are eligible. Assistant professors are encouraged to apply. In a given year, a faculty member may apply for a Summer Research Award or a Semester Research Award, but not both.
This award is designated for research materials, minor equipment, and other expenses essential to research projects. Book subsidies are also available when the publisher indicates that publication would otherwise be impossible. Funds are not provided for the payment of consultant's fees or for travel outside the state. Departments are expected to provide funds on a cost-sharing basis. All tenured and tenure-track faculty members are eligible.
This award provides summer funding for creative and performing arts activities for tenured or tenure-track faculty.
