New Faculty Orientation Program

Each August, an orientation program for new University faculty is held. The program is for all new faculty (all ranks of professors, lecturers, research faculty, extension agents, visiting faculty) who have begun at the University in the past twelve months. Listen to Provost Ann Wylie, who will address the state of the University, including information on topics such as national rankings, faculty and student body diversity, and campus funding. The Provost will also discuss goals and plans for enhancing the University's academic excellence.

Meet University of Maryland students. Receive a demographic overview of our student body and then hear from a panel of students who will talk about their impressions of and experiences at the University.

TENURE-TRACK FACULTY: Beginning the Journey Towards Tenure
Receive an introduction to the Campus’s tenure standards and to the promotion review process. Participate in a small group discussion, lead by a senior faculty member, about strategies for getting a successful start on the road to tenure.

RESEARCH FACULTY: Research Administration Q & A
Participate in a round table discussion about assistance available for seeking and administering grants, as well as information about topics such as the human subjects approval process, intellectual property issues, and conflict of interest guidelines.

INSTRUCTIONAL FACULTY: Teaching at Maryland Q & A
Ask questions related to topics raised in earlier sessions such as campus teaching policies and student services.  Gain ideas for teaching a large lecture class, advising doctoral students or whatever topics are on the minds of participants.

Lunch and Orientation Fair
Enjoy lunch with the other new faculty in your college, followed by the Orientation Fair.  The fair will consist of over 40 representatives from on and off campus vendors and resources, such as Campus Recreation Services, Black Faculty and Staff Association, benefits and retirement vendors, and the University’s shuttle bus program.  They will be available to provide informational materials andanswer your questions.
