APT Tenure Procedures Manual Overview

The APT process reflects two characteristics of the University. First, the University has multiple levels of organization. Faculty members have their tenure homes in departments, departments are combined into colleges, and the actions of both levels are governed by campus wide policies. Second, in keeping with the campus commitment to shared governance, advice about promotion and tenure at each of the three levels is provided by a faculty APT committee and by an administrator. Hence, there are ordinarily six sets of recommendations to the President. The order of review is from the most specific level, the Chair and Department APT Committee, through the College APT Committee and Dean to the University APT Committee and Provost and then to the final decision made by the President. When a college is not departmentalized, the first level of review begins at the college. The manual and website are intended to describe how these reviews are organized.

Note that this manual does not cover instructional, library, or research faculty who follow other appointment and promotion processes nor does it cover the search process for faculty positions.
