Examination And Course Assessment Guidelines - University of Maryland
Examination And Course Assessment Guidelines
All Tests, Quizzes, and
Other Course Assessments
- The University provides for the rescheduling of significant assessments
by students without penalty, when such assessments are missed by students
with an excused absence, except in cases where the nature of the assessment
precludes the possibility of rescheduling. For additional information, see
attendance and make-up guidelines.
- All examinations and tests shall be given during class hours in accordance with the regularly
scheduled (or officially "arranged") time and place of each course listed in the Schedule of
Classes. Unpublished changes in the scheduling or location of classes/tests must be approved by the department chair and reported to the dean. It is the responsibility of the student to be
informed concerning the dates of announced quizzes, tests, and examinations.
- Every examination shall be designed to require for its completion not more
than the regularly scheduled period.
- A typewritten, mimeographed, or printed set of questions shall be placed
in the hands of every examinee in every test or examination requiring at least
one period, unless the dean has authorized some other procedure.
Final
Examinations
- A final examination shall be given in every undergraduate course. Exceptions may be made with
the written approval of the chair of the department or the dean.
- All final examinations must be
held on the examination days of the Official Final Examination Schedule. No
final examination shall be given at a time other than that scheduled in the
Official Final Examination Schedule without written permission of the department
chair.
- Graduating seniors will be expected to take final examinations during the
regular final examination period. However, graduating seniors are not required
to take final examinations on the day of graduation or on any regularly scheduled
day following graduation. In courses with examinations scheduled on those
days, graduating seniors must notify their instructors by the end of the schedule
adjustment period.
- The chair of each department is responsible for the adequate administration of examinations in
courses under his or her jurisdiction.
- The time require for the examination's completion should not exceed
the scheduled final examination period.
- The following rules shall govern all University examinations, unless the instructor for a specific course stipulates alternate rules for that course. A breach of any of the rules shall constitute "disruption of class," a disciplinary offense (see the Code of Student Conduct, section 9j), and may serve as the basis of an allegation of academic dishonesty.
- Students arriving late for an examination may not unreasonably disrupt the examination
room.
- Students must leave all unauthorized materials (e.g., books, notes, calculators) with the
proctor before being seated.
- Where seating arrangements are established by proctors, students must conform to
these arrangements.
- Students may not return to an examination room after leaving, unless permission to do
so has been granted by the proctor prior to the student's departure.
- Students must cease conversation prior to the passing out of examination papers and
maintain silence during the entire examination period.
- Students must place examination papers face down on the writing desk until the
examination is officially begun by the proctor.
- Students must keep examination papers flat on the writing desk at all times.
- Students at an examination must be prepared to show current University identification.
- Each faculty member is to retain the students'
final examinations for at least one semester in case of
the need to document past grades. If a faculty member goes on
leave for a semester or longer, or leaves the University, the final examinations
and grade records for the course must be left with the department chair.
- Students whose class schedule requires them to take more than three final
examinations on the same day have the right to reschedule examinations so they
have no more than three on a given day. The student must take responsibilty
for initiating the rescheduling or be responsible for taking the examinations
as scheduled. When rescheduling is necessary, the student should first contact
the instructor(s) of the class(es). Students who have difficulties rescheduling
examinations with their instructors should contact the Dean's Office of their
academic program for help. Student wishing to reschedule a final examination
under this rule should contact their instructor(s) by the deadline for dropping
courses (see Deadlines in
this schedule of classes). Students are strongly encouraged to check the final
exam schedule before registering for courses. For additional information, see Attendance
and Assessment in this schedule of classes.
Grade Submission Expectation
All final grades should be submitted electronically through UMEG. Faculty
are urged to submit their final grades within 48 hours after the scheduled
exam because delays in grade submission impede students ability to finalize
registration for the next semester and to take advantage of Winterterm and
Summer Session to maintain their progress to degree.
